Second Ball
Four ball with a twist. When both teams' best balls tie on a hole, the second-best ball breaks it.
What it is
Second Ball keeps the four-ball frame — two-player teams, everyone plays their own ball, low ball counts — but adds a tiebreaker so fewer holes are halved.
When the two teams post the same best net score on a hole, the format looks at each team's second ball. The lower second ball wins the hole outright.
How scoring works
- 1.Both partners play out the hole and record net scores as in four ball.
- 2.Each team's best (low) net ball is compared first.
- 3.If the best balls tie, the second-best net ball on each team is compared.
- 4.The team with the lower second ball wins the hole. Only if both balls tie on both teams is the hole halved.
Handicaps
Identical to four ball: each player gets their own percentage of course handicap on their own stroke index, so both a player's balls carry their strokes into the tiebreak.
Best for
Groups who find straight four ball produces too many halved holes. Bringing the second ball into play rewards two-deep teams where both partners contribute.
